Greenville, SC: Artisphere: The International Arts Festival of Greenville, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Arts Council and Centre Stage - SC, announce the first annual Artists of the Upstate exhibition at Centre Stage from April 3 – May 20, 2008. This juried exhibition is open to artists living within a 35-mile radius of Greenville, SC and seeks to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work being generated by artists living in the Upstate region of South Carolina. The exhibit is free to the public and will be viewable during Centre Stage – SC regular hours of operation and during performances.
The event is a great way to get the local artists and the community excited about the festival. MAC Executive Director Alan Ethridge remarks, “It is very important that the work of visual artists living and working in Greenville is highlighted during Artisphere, and this juried exhibition is an ideal platform to showcase the talent and professionalism of the artists who add so much to the vitality of our community.”
Registration of entries will take place on Friday, February 29 and Saturday, March 1, 2008 from 10:00am – 6:00pm at the Metropolitan Arts Council, 16 Augusta Street. Entries must be original 2D works of art that have been completed within the last three years. Entries in the painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, digital art, and photography media categories will be accepted. The juried exhibition will be on display April 3 – May 23, 2008 with an opening reception on Thursday, April 3 from 6:00 – 9:00pm at Centre Stage. The opening reception will feature a lecture entitled “Collecting 101” by Martha Severens, Curator of the Greenville County Museum of Art, at 8:00pm. The Greenville Symphony Orchestra will present excerpts from its Spotlight series featuring music by Rossini, Ligeti and Carl Nielsen.
The Artists of the Upstate exhibition will be juried by Wendy H. Outland, an independent art consultant from Asheville, NC. Outland received her BFA from Ringling College of Art and Design and has worked in arts administration for 26 years. She has served as curator, editor, grants panelist, workshop presenter and coordinator for numerous projects and events. Among the many festivals she has juried: Artisphere (Greenville, SC); The 4 Bridges Arts Festival (Chattanooga, TN); Bele Chere (Asheville, NC), Piccolo Spoleto Craft Show (Charleston, SC) and Artclectic (Nashville, TN).
Brad Campbell of Cherry, Bekaert & Holland, LLP, Artists of the Upstate presenting sponsor states that, “Greenville artists are a major component of Artisphere, and this unique juried exhibition will showcase the quality and professionalism of visual artists living and working in our community. The exhibition is an outstanding collaboration between Artisphere, the Metropolitan Arts Council, Centre Stage – SC, the Greenville County Museum of Art and the Greenville Symphony Orchestra.” Projected awards for the 1st Annual Artists of the Upstate exhibition equal $3,500 to be distributed for Best In Show, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, and a Merit Award. Award winners will be announced at the opening reception on Thursday, April 3.
